Drive Failure, Can anyone diagnose?

I've been reading some of the other threads but they are all different.

I had a lacie (seagate inside) 500 gb that started working very very slow. At first the drive was still mounting then it stopped altogether.

I tried data rescue and disk warrior seems like it's a hardware failure. The drive spins, and I hear it reading when I first turn it on then there it suddenly stops reading...

I tried freezing it overnight (just read about this, figured won't hurt) without luck.

Any other suggestions? System profiler sees the hardware but not the name I gave it or mount it.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated. Or if you know of any hard drive recoveries that are good and fairly priced please let me know.

As inexpensive as hard drives are nowadays it just doesn't make economical sense to spend a whole bunch of money on hard drive recovery. The exception of course IMO, is if the data on the dead drive is critical to you.

To answer your question, the drive is probably beyond repair. It seems you've tried all the recommended methods of breathing life back into it. If the data on the drive is critical to you, then I suggest you try a Data Recovery specialist service:

As chscag states HDD are really cheap. Buy two the same, an external Firewire capable housing and use one to back up your system with SuperDuper.

Thanks guys... The data is what I really need. But I actually sent it off today for recovery.... We have all our photos from the past 3 yrs there....

On another note, anyone recommend any online backup company that's not expensive ($5/month?!) Thanks

for backup get two identical external drives. flip between the drives when you do your backups. when they become full remove the old stuff.

dont leave the drives power up, they should last a long time

buy drives with a long warranty, the manufacturer does an effective job screening out the near bad.
