I am trying to take a DVD a friend made of their workout and downloading it into my computer for purposes of editing it so that I can post it on youtube. How can I take a DVD and download it into my computer so that I can edit it?

Handbrake is the likely answer. Search the forum for ripping or converting a DVD. This has been discussed many times.
