Help with PB 12" Darwin/BSD

Dear Forum

I last night ran ony X on my 12" PB. When I restarted it this morning it came up with the black screen and white writing saying

Darwin/BSD (my name and PB G4) (console)

It asks for login and password. Tried that and i says it is incorrect. It sometimes takes me to OS X but all the applications keep failing.

I can access disk Utility, is there some way of taking my mac back in time before this all happened?

Your help would be gratefully appreciated.
