Improving results in Google searches

I am looking to improve the search results of a website i did a couple of months ago. I have never used Meta Names. Just wondering is there any Do's and Don't's regarding the use of Meta Names. Does it just need to be on the index page of the website, or should the same Meta Names be inserted on every page? Any other methods of maximizing search results?

In my recent research for the same they say meta data isn't used as much anymore because it is easily fabricated. Now search engines are using the actual text on the site. Check this out for some good info...
