I use iStat Pro to monitor my system. I was just wondering what temps are considered normal vs. high, and the same with the fan speeds?

For me:
Idle: 42C
Web Browsing: 48C
Youtube: 58C
Photoshop: 67C
Games on Bootcamp: 75-90C (depending on the game)

My fans only ramp up half way when I get around 67C and ramp up to full blast around 75-80C...

in my experience, anything involving bootcamp, flash/streaming media, ichat video, or video games tends to bump up the temperatures. My normal operating temp is:
Non-air conditioned environment: 127-135 F (55-57 C) with 2000 rpm
At work with AC environment: 109-115 F (42-46 C) with 2000 rpm
With ichat or video flash: 160+ F (70 C). I turn my fans to 3500+ rpm at this point with SMC fan control

Hope that helps,
ed

My MBP is odd now, it is stuck at a default fan speed of 3050, does anyone know a reason for that?

I got Smc FanControl and I notice when I click to set to Higher Rpm for a moment it kicks it up to 3500-4000 and but then it goes right back down to 1617 is what it's at now. It did seem to bring the temp down slightly to 48 but then back up to 50 again.

I'm not sure if the Smc FanControl is really working properly and keeping the fans set to a higher RPM.

My fan rpms show 1615 and the temp is around 50C is that normal?

Thanks,
Phil

There's no need to be messing around with your fan speeds! 50°C is ABSOLUTELY nothing to worry about. Lots of folks run their laptops at temps of 70°C+ all day long...and some folks even get over 90°C.

So as you can see 50°C is NOTHING to be concerned about.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
I wish SMC FanControl, iStat, etc never came to be, because these threads are neverending.

To add...most folks when their Macbooks are running at what an owner thinks is hot (70°C or higher)...their computers fans are probably already running at their maximum speed...so programs like SMC FanControl are not going to be of much use...other than telling the user what their fan speed is.

Any temperature that does not cause the computer to shut down automatically ( to prevent overheating ) is considered a normal temperature. Same for fan speeds.

There is no need to second guess the Apple engineers who design this stuff.

Fact; notebook computers run hot. Doesn't matter who makes them; Apple, Dell, HP, Acer, etc. etc. It's the nature of the beast. :\

Fact; notebook computers run hot.

Especially newer (last 3-4 years) notebooks with faster/more powerful processors & video hardware!:)
