I had been playing Diablo II LoD on my PC, and have recently switched to a Macbook. Before that I used to do the 'alt + tab' things to get out of the Diablo II windows. But how do I do that on a mac?

It shouldn't make a difference if it's full screen or windowed. Command + tab usually switches between applications but I guess that game won't allow it. Sorry I can't be of more help. :(
