I am currently starting a website for business purposes. Does it matter if I choose a .net domain name over a .com? What type of negative impact would there be? Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend getting both, if you choose only one and your business becomes successful, someone could easily nab up the .com domain (presuming that you bought the net) and could try to sell it to you for a few grand - although, if your company name is copyrighted, I know they can get into a lot of trouble and will have to give you your domain back, free.

Still, imo - both, or just the .com

That's how it first was but not really used anymore.

I would purchase a .com just because that's the most common and more likely for someone to remember.

To protect your identity get both of them .com and .net. ALso I would also second the .com one.

You don't even need to be a NFP to get a .org anymore. The only ones you can't get pretty much are .edu, .gov and .mil :D

get it in EVERY extension you can.

I own the .com, .net, .org and .ca for most of my domains. Means I have quite a few domains total, but for some projects it's essential and looks so much better.

Buy both the .com and .net if you can.

.com is more of an industry standard (.com, company)

The bottom line is, every TLD besides .com is worth squat. You need people to remember your URL, and the more confusing it is... whether that be because of length, dashes that don't translate into the spoken name of the site, or a weird TLD, it'll cause you problems.

It's worth throwing away a great domain name that you can't get the .com.

But for the cost of a domain it's worth having A record point to a .com CNAME. Arguing otherwise is ridiculous ;)
