Real stupid question about apple remote

is there any way to allow the apple remote to wake a computer? i looked but couldn't find an option, and i remember seeing one.

MacBook 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo | 1GB RAM | OS X 10.6.3 | 250GB External HD | 8GB iPod Touch 1st Gen 3.1.3
Although it seems like a choppy way to achieve this, but when your Mac is in Sleep mode, I found that hitting one of the volume controls will wake it, but it will change the volume. And it takes a while. It's not instant like just hitting the spacebar or something.
