iPod icon not appearing.

Your Mac's Specs
MacBook white 160GB. iPod nano... old school one.
When I plug in my iPod into my MacBook it isn't being recognized by my Mac. I have it on auto sincing. I've tried almost everything, I'm really sad. Can someone tell me what to do?
