how to switch hard drive's data

Hey, I bought a new harddrive for my macbook. How would i be able to switch everything thats on my old hard drive to my new one.

can i just copy everything to an external HD? then copy it to my new one?

also am i going to have to install leopard on the new HD that i get? or will it be installed when i copy all the files from the external?

Mac Mini Core i7 2012 | White 2009 MacBook 2 Ghz | 733 Mhz G4 Quicksilver
you can use any of the apps chscag has mentioned to clone and back-up your drive.

Then you can do a clean install of Leopard (recommended) - wiping all your old stuff off the macs drive

Then you can use Migration Assistant in Utilities to migrate all your stuff (files apps music etc) to your new leopard installation from that back-up drive you made
