HELP! How to open MKV files with subtitles

hey im trying to watch an anime that supports MKV and has subtitles with them
i've used Zoom Player for Windows but i dont know any equivalent for a mac
I tried Mplayer OSX and that does not get the subtitles

i also have VLC ... it works but the subtitles are not pretty like how they are supposed to be for the anime (you can see through zoom player)

please help
