I have a Black MacBook that's about a bit more than a year old. It has worked flawlessly to this point, but when I turned it on today, the display was VERY dim, like it was in sleep mode. Problem is, it will not come out of this mode, no matter what I do. I've re-sent the PRAM, hard-restarted it, played with the dimmer switches...nothing. I can connect to an external monitor it it works just fine, and I can JUST make out what is on the actual laptop screen, but no brightness whatsoever. About ready to take it in to the shop, but thought I would check and see if anyone has any thoughts on what else I might try before I do...

Your backlight tubes need to be replaced. Definitely take it in especially if you are still under warranty. If it's not under warranty, you may be able to replace them yourself. See here:
