i saw the video of the WWDC 08 and Jobs said it is going to be 64 bit all the way now.. what exactly 64 bit do. i have read in the forums that you can get more use out of your ram from 64 bit, but is that it? sorry if i am asking a stupid question.

64-bit allows you to address memory beyond 3GB. Leopard already supports 64-bit, so I'm not sure exactly how they intend to optimize that support in Snow Leopard as a 'key feature'.

All systems with the Core 2 Dual (not the older Core Duo) are 64 Bit.

Way... way too many specs to list.

I'm not sure either, it will be interesting to see what comes out as more and more specs come to light. I'll be upgrading for ZFS anyway ;)

ZFS sounds quite insane to say the least

so if 32 bit will utilize 3.3GB RAM, how much ram do you need to utilize the full 64 bit of RAM...

A 32-bit operating system can address up to 3GB of RAM. If you have more RAM beyond that, you'll need a 64-bit operating system to address it, otherwise it will be inaccessible. A 64-bit operating system doesn't require a certain amount of memory, it's just a prerequisite to addressing anything above 3GB.

if 64 bit is suppose to be that great hunderds of GB's of ram would be insane why the ZFS (128) that you mentioned b4? sounds 64bit would be over kill as it is?

In 1994, 8MB of RAM was overkill and 32-bit Operating Systems were just making their debut. ZFS is another topic entirely.

Well, if you consider the fact that we were able to do many of the things that we do with computers today, back in 1994, that just might be possible - particularly if Microsoft has their way :)

I'm not sure how old you are, but my first computer was a Commodore 64. The 64 stood for 64K (of memory), which was a big deal back in 1982 - so much so that they felt compelled to use "64" in the name. That was 26 years ago. In 1982, if you would have told someone that computers would be available with 1TB hard drives (there are 1024GB in a TB), they probably would have thought you were crazy.

Get this....

Wikipedia article on 64-bit technology said:
The emergence of the 64-bit architecture effectively increases the memory ceiling to 264 addresses, equivalent to approximately 17.2 billion gigabytes, 16.8 million terabytes, or 16 exabytes of RAM. To put this in perspective, in the days when 4 MB of main memory was commonplace, the maximum memory ceiling of 232 addresses was about 1,000 times larger than typical memory configurations. Today, when 2 GB of main memory is common, the ceiling of 264 addresses is about ten billion times larger, i.e. ten million times more headroom than the 232 case
.

...so my estimate of hundreds of gigabytes was just a bit conservative! :D

CWA, I remember those days all too well. My first real computer was the Commodore 64 also followed by the 128 and Atari 130XE. I modded the Atari to 320K RAM and people thought I was crazy then. Most was used for a RAM Drive which was so fast for the time. My first PC shortly after that had 1MEG RAM! WOW, I had arrived!

When I worked with newer Amiga's with 4 Megs RAM I was in heaven. There were comments back then that even 640k was all one would ever need. They were not looking ahead! :D
