HELP ...Flashing ? folder on leopard boot up

My wife's laptop running leopard froze up while in screen saver mode and she attempted to reboot. Now , the only image that comes up is a folder in the middle of the screen with a flashing ? question mark.
The whole operating system is froze up. How do I proceed ?

The flashing folder and question mark usually means it can't find anything to boot from - ie, a hard drive problem.

If you stick in the Leopard disk and hold C at startup can you boot from disk?
