mysql.sock -- what goes in the file?

I am having MySQL installation problems..for some reason the mysql.sock file can't be found. I can create the file but I don't know what goes in it.

I read elsewhere that the file is created when the server starts up (to have communication with the client). That's not happening for me.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Yeah that file is created when you start up the server.

Here are a couple links of instructions in no particular order:

Cheers!
