Hi, I'm sorry to rehash this but I'm kinda confused...

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-9258-9298

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html which contains the paragraph...

"7-inch (diagonal) antiglare widescreen TFT display with support for millions of colors; optional glossy widescreen display

Supported resolutions: 1680 by 1050 (native), 1280 by 800, 1152 by 720, 1024 by 640, and 800 by 500 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1280 by 1024 pixels at 5:4 aspect ratio; 1280 by 1024 pixels at 5:4 aspect ratio stretched; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio stretched; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio stretched

Optional 17-inch (diagonal) antiglare TFT widescreen LED backlit display with support for millions of colors; optional glossy widescreen display"

So these two seem to imply that there is an optional backlit led for the 17", but the Apple store I went to today said that NO 17" MBP's have LED Backlit displays...

????

So I went back online and looked at the store for the MBP, and yes there are options for upgrading the screen to hi res and / or glossy, there doesn't seem to be a way to ADD this ''Optional Backlit LED"

Can anyone please clarify this?

I'm trying to convince my mother to get a 17"MBP but she likes the backlit screen on the 15" that she saw instore today.

Thank you...

The hi-res screen is LED-backlit. You get the LED backlighting if and only if you order the high resolution screen. Your Apple Store employee was wrong, unless he meant they don't carry 17-inch MacBook Pros with that option in the physical retail store and they really don't. Directly from the text you get if you click "Learn more" next to the Display options on the Apple online store order page for the 17-inch MacBook Pro:

About display resolution
The standard 1680 x 1050 resolution on the 17-inch MacBook Pro offers as many pixels as the 20-inch Apple Cinema Display.

By upgrading to the high-resolution 1920x1200 pixel display, you'll enjoy a workspace with 30% more pixels than the standard model, or as many pixels as the 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display. You'll have more space for palettes and windows, and you can watch 1080 HD video content at full resolution.

The high-resolution display also offers LED backlighting, which delivers instant full-screen brightness and greater power efficiency compared to standard displays — up to an additional 30 minutes of battery life for wireless productivity.

Important note:
The actual size of the display is the same (17-inch diagonal) on both models.

They all have LED backlighting. The only one that doesn't is The MacBook. I was working for Apple up until a week ago. They made a huge deal about going to LED on the 17in models first. A few updates ago the 15 inchers got LED too. Then the Air came out with it as well.

The 1680x1050 17-inch screen does not have LED backlighting, as that diagram clearly shows since the LED specification is only for the 1920x1200 one. Furthermore, the 15-inch MacBook Pro in 2007 was the first Apple notebook to get an LED-lit display.
