Ive got an apple script that i use on my mbp to automatically connect to my network drive at work when i log in.

tell application "Finder"
open location "smb://jmullenberg@srv01:139/vol"
end tell

The problem is that when im at home or on the road, when i log in, it spends way too much time looking for the network drive before it gives up.

Is there something i can add to the script to shorten the time it spends looking for the network drive? Also is there something i can add to close the script and not give me an error message when it doesnt find the network drive?

Great question - I've run into the same problem with my NAS. One nice thing about Windows is that when you "map" to a shared drive, it maintains that mapping regardless of whether that resource is available or not. It doesn't error out if it's not present, it just marks it "disconnected". Conversely, I find that OS X complains constantly about drive mountings if they're not available - and it tries vigorously to establish them if not present. I'd be curious if anyone has any insight into this.
