iMac G4 Questions

Hello Guys i recently just bought a Imac G4 off of ebay and i haven't received it yet, i wanted to know a few things about it.

Specs:

15" Screen
512 DDR2 Ram
40GB HDD
700MHZ PPC

I am defenitly going to upgrade to 1GB Ram and a 250GB HDD.

But considering it's a mac, would 700Mhz enough for general tasking? Such as chatting, word processing, photo editing and website designing? I usually use my dell xps 720 for those kind's of task, but wondering if the mac would be up for it.

Any feedback is appreciated.

It's all kind of relative, but if you maxed out the RAM (newegg has good deals) I would definitely say it'd be comfortable handling the things you mentioned.

Look for Tiger OS X.4, install that and update to X.4.11 for best performance. Make sure you get the full install DVD which is black and not a grey model specific disc.

DONT upgrade the hard drive. there is too much at risk when you do so (reapplying thermal paste that will cause the mac to overheat if not applied correctly). I would suggest purchasing an external drive. Also, the 700 mghz processor is NOT enough to photo edit or web design, but you shouldn't have a problem doing any of the other things that you mentioned.

With a 700Mhz Processor.... You'll be just fine, but if don't have to replace the drive than don't, but if you really need to than you should. Other than that, good luck with your mac!

You can replace the HDD no problems if you wish and 2002 model iMacs and later handle larger capacity drives. Suggest you boost the memory up to 1GB and you will find it much more repsonsive.

Eh? A 700Mhz G4 is fine for photo editing and web design.

Most design agencies were using Power Mac G4s in 2002/03. We were using 733Mhz models until we got Intel iMacs in 2006.

i dont know about that. i just sold my imac 700 mhz and was having slowness issues with just running multiple tabs in firefox, let alone photo editing, which is a very processor-intensive task. (i had 640 mb of RAM)
