Problem with top-right-hand menus

On my Macbook which is less than a year old, the top right hand menus (such as airport, international, time and date etc) open only for a couple of seconds before disappearing and stay highlighted blue after being used. This problem only started a week ago and I have no idea what triggered it. I have reinstalled Mac OS X and done all software updates etc and the problem persists. How on earth can I get this to sort itself out?

also I've just remembered the menu bar used to be translucent and it isnt anymore, even though the option for translucency is still enabled in system preferences...

Try disabling the translucency setting and see if that helps. From what I recall, some MacBooks don't have the graphics power to handle that option adequately.

Alrighty. Try creating a new user and see if it recurs when logged into that user.
