converting .rmvb to .avi?

ive been trying to find a freeware program that allows for the conversion of .rmvb files to .avi i hav tried using ffmpegx with the proper codecs installed yet everytime i click and drag a file into the program, it freezes up on me. ive read other threads on other sites and it seems that this problem has happened for others but i havnt seen ne1 answer it yet. if ne1 knows how this can b remedied or even a different program that is capable it would b much appreciated.
