If the inverter cable that comes out of the screen is not plugged in should the screen show anything?

I'm going to say... yes...

BUT, I'm basing that on the fact that the brightness of my screen flickers, which is apparently caused by some class of dodgy inverter, but the image on the screen doesn't flicker when this happens.

ADDED BIT:
My boyfriend has just said that there would be text etc on the screen as per usual, but it would be dark (too dark to see) - if you shone a very bright light on it you would be able to see the stuff on the screen.

Is your Macbook still under warranty? if it is, call Apple tech support and ask them or take it to an Apple store and get it checked out.
