Serial Port

I own a multimeter with a serial port. My question is can I get a Serial card for Mac and run the software through Virtual PC. I know it works with UNIX on an x86 but I don't know about the Mac hardware compatability as no new macs have this port. I would like to see compatability as it was a handy program.

Can't you get a serial to USB adaptor?

I don't know? I will try and it will probably be a lot easier? Is the data transfer between the two types compatable? Or is it like Sony's i-Link to USB fiasco?
