MAC OSX 10.3.x error Connecting to Win2003 Server

Hello everyone.

When trying to connect with Mac OSX 10.3.x (Panther)
GO -> CONNECT TO SERVER -> ip address of server

I get a message like:
'Trying to connect to "afp://x.x.x.x/"
Can't connect to server because name or password are wrong'

I dont get a chance to even enter my username and password

However

When trying to connect with Mac OSX 10.3.x (Panther)
GO -> CONNECT TO SERVER -> smb://x.x.x.x/
This works fine.
I can enter my username and password and i can get on to the file server.

The Windows Services for Mac is enabled.

Any ideas on what might be causing the problem?????

Solution- problem now resolved

Right click on My Computer -> Manage
Right click on Shared Folders -> Configure Server for Macintosh
Under security there is a section called Enable Authentication -> select from the pulldown menu: Apple Clear Text for Windows
