gen 3 iPod problem

I just restored this gen 3 ipod and i'm trying to connect it to my macbook. i have itunes updated and my usb ports are working. when i plug in the ipod, the ipod shows the apple logo then shows the cable and an arrow indicating i need to plug the ipod in. then it shuts off.
