MacBook's RAM

i dont know if this is in the right place, but, ok every forum that i have read on here everyone says the ram cost $400 from apple. when on the apple website the price is $200, now the price from crucial is $103 without shipping.. so my question is... is there any difference in the quality and performance from the apple ram and the aftermarket ram? if not, just my opinion but the price difference is not substantial enough to forego putting it in oneself and messing with the warranty.

I don't think so. Crucial is highly recommended I have not or would not buy Ram from Apple.

There shouldn't be a difference unless it's a used RAM card. And I'm assuming you're upgrading your MBP's RAM? It already has 2GB of RAM, and some slots to get it to 4GB. I would think 2GB would be enough. I have a MacBook, and it has 1GB of RAM. it works pretty well for me.

Ram dropped from $400 for 4gb to $200 on Apples site fairly recently. That explains the $400 quote. 4gb's of ram from crucial ran me $103 with shipping when I ordered it.

There IS NO difference in quality between Samsung (which was the ram included with my MBP) and Crucial ram. Apple does nothing more than spec ram and buy it from a supplier (probably based on bid at the time )



btw, the MBP does not have more than 2 slots. It comes with 2 1gb sticks. To upgrade it you replace those with 2 2gb sticks.

i was speaking of buying the 4 gb of ram when i buy the comp.. not upgrading the ram..

also does messing with the ram mess with the warranty?

Changing out the RAM does not void the warranty. unless you break something in the process which is hard to do.

Buying it upgraded is a waste of $200 IMO. Upgrading the ram requires unscrewing a #0 phillips three screws, that's really the most complicated part of the swap. Since ram is considered user serviceable and does not effect the warranty, you're paying $200 for less than 5 minutes of work. Or put another way, billable rate for this job would work out to $2400/hr.

FWIW the crucial 4gb 'kit' was installed before I ever booted my MBP up when I received it. I've since sold my original 2gb's of ram.
