The Apple Hardware Test should be able to detect faulty memory.

Also, I would highly recommend Crucial memory if you're looking for a good 3rd party supplier. Crucial is the retail arm of Micron, which is one of the world's largest memory manufacturers. Their prices are very competitive and they guarantee compatibility if you use their memory configurator.

No, it's for all Intel Macs. That particular article focuses on iMacs, but the test procedure is essentially the same for any Intel Mac.

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

# Maximum Memory Capacity: 2048MB
# Currently Installed Memory: 4GB
# Available Memory Slots: 0
# Number of Banks: 2
# Dual Channel Support: Yes
# CPU Manufacturer:
# CPU Family: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz
# CPU Speed: 2160 MHz

that's a string from crucial test it tells me that i can only have 1 GB peer bank so why those he detect 4GB, from the hardware test i get a message that there is no problem

you think i should change these 4GB for 2GB?
and is it possible that 4GB slows my mac an i do not understand why on www.apple.com i see that 4 gen mac can accept 4GB of ram.

Assuming by 4th gen you mean late 2007, it will support 4GB fine. Prior ones will support up to 3gb (even so, get a 4GB kit, as you need matched pairs for optimal performance). I have had several instances of Crucial's configurator suggesting incorrect memory (speed, capacity, etc...). You need to get a 4GB (2x2GB) kit for that. It uses PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SODIMMs.

When you ordered the memory, did you order two individual sticks, or did you order a kit?
