Leopard install (clean) from external optical drive?

If the external drive is firewire maybe, To try it out pop the Leopard DVD into the external optical drive and reboot holding down 'C' and see if the machine boots from the install DVD.
If it does okay. USB, including USB2, may well be too slow, but if that is what you have, try that.

I think that you should be able to because the MBA can do it through USB2.0, right??
