Basicly, he, an Ubuntu user, sees there's a new version. He figures he should download it from the apple website. He gets the Combo update, and now the macbook won't shut down. How can he fix it?

Yep, this would be me. :D

Well actually the MacBook wouldn't shut down before the update.

I figured the update would fix this, so I installed the 10.5.3 Combo Update.
Only later I figured out that this was for 10.5.0 users, not 10.5.2 users.

Is there any way to revert this update and downgrade to 10.5.2?

Also, can somebody help make the MacBook shutdown?
(I tried Apple Logo >> Shut Down and the Power Button Shut down, but no luck.) :|
(I don't want to resort to force-quitting since I hear that's bad.)

In this thread, I described how to use Onyx to clean up and run maintenance on your system. It cleared up the slow shutdown problem for that poster, I'd recommend you start by looking at that thread.

Exsecrabilus, The update WAS for 10.5.2 users, not sure why you figured it was for 10.5.0 users...

Keep the update until you run Onyx and then see what happens from there.

ORLY? 'Cause the friend who started this topic for me said it was.

Then what's the difference between the Combo Update and the Update?

Sorry for double-posting, but.....

The MacBook doesn't freeze or anything.
It runs applications fine and everything works.
It's just when you try to shut it down or something, it never works.

Exsecrabilus,

If you still can't shut it down after you've run Onyx, try removing the battery then replacing it, see if that helps.

There must be some difference. The file sizes are different. He asked a valid question that I would like to know as well, what is the difference between the larger Combo update vs. regular update?

About the 10.5.3 update

#1 difference is downloading the combo update gives you the opportunity to verify you have a good download.

The combo update applies all previous updates, multiple languages and has PPC along with Intel code.
My guess is that there are several different 'Software Update' versions for different machines to reduce the file size.

Understood, but running routine maintenance and clean up can only be a good thing when you're working toward the resolution of a problem. If your car is having transmission trouble, it's likely the mechanic will change the fluid before they consider rebuilding the transmission ;)

Also the combo update will not hurt you. The basic difference between the combo and the regular update. Is the combo includes all modules needed to move a system from any version of the OS in this case 10.5 to 1.5.x. Whereas the update will only update you from the previous to the latest update.

This is what usually happens:

Apple Logo >> Shut Down or Power Button Shut Down doesn't work.

I try Apple Logo >> Shut Down/Restart/Log Off and wait 1 minute for it to shut down automatically.
The menu bars and windows just disappear, but the Dock remained where it is.
I click on an icon on the Dock and everything--the desktop icons and the menu bar/panel--comes back.

I tried the OnyX thing, it didn't work.
After finishing checking, it asks me to restart, but when I click to restart, it doesn't.
