Probably a dumb question, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere and couldn't figure how to search for it... several tries failed!

Basically, the little sysmbols on the left of the threads, what do they mean and why the colors? Stop and go? :)

Red is for a message that is Unread by you. Blue is for a message you have already read.

I am pretty sure this is correct.
