I have lots of video's and films on my hard drive that I would like to convert so I can watch them on an iphone.

The movies are large file sizes so im looking for a nice free easy to use software that will compress the files down to a smaller size and resolution for the iphone and convert the file type to be played on it.

both handbrake and ffmpegX have presets for converting files to iPod and iPhone formats

Handbrake actually uses the ffmpeg open source libraries and has a better GUI.

handbrake is for converting dvds, not just any file...

ffmpeg is probably your best bet, but personally I use VisualHub, also based off of ffmpeg

True. I thought the OP was talking about DVDs. VisualHub is good, but iSquint is free.

yes VisualHub comes at a price, and iSquint is a good free alternative (from the same company!)

the thread starter mentioned movie files from his HD, but knowing what to do with those DVDs is also good

How are the movies stored on your hard drive ? I have had luck just using iTunes itself. Open iTunes click the advanced tap and select create an iphone version.
