• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have a USB-based Analog to Digital video converter that I used when I had my PC, for transferring old family video tapes to digital to burn DVDs.

Can I use this with my Mac with iMovie 08), or will the Mac only accept digital video via a Firewire input?

Unless the company had a special driver available for the Mac, I think you're out of luck for using that USB device.

IMovie 08 has the ability to deal with USB video cameras that are drive or memory based. It treats them like hard drives.

Well, you didn't say what brand it is. I have an analog to digital converter for my MBP that is used through the USB. It does not work with iMovie. It works using its own software to capture then you can import it to iMovie. So you may be able to use it if you can find the right software.

Here is what I have...
