Hi folks!

I have a G4 400hz tower kicking around and have decided to upgrade it with a mate to use it for music production.

Just wondering what we should be doing as neither of us have a clue!

were on the smallest budget possible!!

Hiya Mikey,

If you want to use it for Music, Then i suggest you get a clamshell.... there pretty old, but there really good when it comes with dealing with music, and all, regardless of the age of the computer it has some relally good features, There pretty cheap... $90, it runs OS 9.22 and its really good for music and emails, etc. at 466 MHZ its a pretty fast bugger :p.

Sorry mikey small budgets and CPU upgrades do not go hand in hand. Go to OWC at www.macsales.com and check out the range of Sonnet, Mercury Extreme and Powerlogix there. Personally have used to Mercury Extreme 1.3GHz upgrade and it is fast with 2MB L3 cache.

If you do go that way make sure you have firmware 4.2.8f1 installed prior to fitting the upgrade.

^Above mentioned processor upgrade and more ram. Power Mac G4 ram is stupid cheap now-a-days, though as was said before, processor upgrades... are not.

good luck!

Mikey

hey mikey,
im responding to this mostly for someone else who finds the thread.
the site you want to check out for this is Mac OS 9 Lives - Home
its a site dedicated to music production on the powermac g4!

the most important thing is that u have the right compatible software + hardware
running os9 is the best way to get the most out of these old g4 machines
at least this is the opinion of the members of the macos9lives site
primary focused on using cubase vst 5+ or using pro tools 5+ for mac os9
but we also discuss reason + ableton live, as well as digital performer.

http://www.macos9lives.com/smforum/ is the place to visit if you want to do some great music with a g3 or g4 powerpc mac for very little money!
