Hey folks, well I"ve come to the realization I can't afford a new Mac......however I have found what I think to be a good deal, a G4 MDD used, it's a dual 1.25er, has 1.75Gb RAM a super drive and has an 80Gb HD and apparantly an AGP video card stuck in to it that could (hopefully) drive say a 22 inch widescreen LCD....The seller is asking $450 CDN for it, I'd just be nice to have a fast Mac like this, since one of my eMacs has taken a turn and went dead.

Any input would be appreciated, pros and cons alike.

Ken

EDIT: Found out it's got a GeForce4 Ti in it........and also, does anyone know if it can take in an Airport Extreme Card from the deadish eMac ?

Believe it or not, the price might be slightly on the high side. Have the seller run the hardware check. Look on lowendmac.com to see what video card came with it and compare that to what the seller says it comes with. You want to make sure it has a DVI port as the ADC will require a ADC-DVI converter to use DVI monitors. ADC was a custom Apple thing.

For common things it should be a fast enough Mac. You can't run iMovie 08 on it though. That doesn't sound like it will be a problem for you.

You can check e-bay or craigslist to figure out current pricing.

Standard video card is probably an ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Pro with 64MB RAM. The price is okay if the machine comes with the install operating system disc AND the original Apple Hardware Test otherwise it is worth less.

Can't you get a Mac mini for not much more than that price? It'd be a lot faster, and you're supplying the monitor on your own anyway.

Mac Mini's start here at $649, then add in $15 EHF recycling fee then 12 percent sales tax, (7 percent provincial and 5 percent federal) comes to about $733.....

But since you are buying used, you should be looking for used deals.

Just a few weeks ago I'm sure I saw some used minis at WestWorld on Broadway in Vancouver. They were probably PPC processors. The price was $399.

You should check craigslist and the Buy & Sell.

I see you appended to your first post. The GeForce4 Ti should be able to display to a 22" display. It displays to my smaller widescreen 20" Dell. I can't remember the resolution of that.

There is a slot for an airport card, but it is the first generation. At some point apple changed the form factor. I would be surprised to here it is the same one as the eMac.

Been to WestWorld....ugh....been down the street at Simply, better, even TMM on 4th, found the MDD on craigslist, gonna go have a lookie at it tonight, and go from there. Just see no need to spend $400 on a used G4 1.25 Mini (yes I saw the pile of them there) when I can possibly get a dual 1.25 MDD...just my thinking

Your buck so your call but you are correct!

Minis might be okay for some, but also here in Australia are as dear as hens teeth. Then have the disadvantage of a notebook 2.5" HDD, limited connections and graphic display cards.

LOL always like that when you go into the lolly shop!

If you want it spend the extra $600. Not much value buying something cheaper and for the next couple of years wishing you had the brains and bought the better/later model product!

Well the lollypop shop had a nightmare to offer, went to take a good look at the MDD, No factory restore discs, dude pulls out a OS X 10.0.3 CD......according to Mactracker (handy handy app) the minimum is 10.2, sticker says it's to have Airport, card missing, supposed to have a 120Gb drive, only has an 80, wanted to see it operating, can't do that at a gas station, simply put, NO SALE. Anywho, gonna take a look at the following,

iMac 17 inch
1.83Ghz Core Duo, 512Mb 160Gb Combo
$600 OBO

Mini
1.66 Core Duo, 512Mb, 60Gb Combo
$350 But might not have enough ooomph to push a 22 widescreen LCD at 1680x1050

Lowendmac says the mini will drive that display.

Be sure to check the About This Mac under the Apple menu and that the box says it is a "Core Duo" as opposed to a "Core Solo". The difference is that the solo only has one processor while the duo is two processors on one chip.

Ok before I spend the time to tear my mini apart, (yes just got one as I'm back from vacation) what are the specs for the hard drive, 60Gb isn't too big imho, just need to know if it's a standard 3.5 inch SATA or 2.5 inch SATA..

Got a Mini 1.66 Core Duo, 512 Mb (Already got a pair of 1Gb sticks for it) but the drive is a litle on the smallish side at 60Gb, thinking of a 120 or larger.

Thanks for all the input folks !
