I can receive emails in mail but when I try to send them they stay in the outbox

smtp.mac.com is right.

On the advanced tab do you have use SSL checked and authentication set to password?

but as cwa pointed out it's ONLY right if you're using a .mac service.

What email service provider are you using?

Check the FAQ's on your mail account cox, comcast, gmail, whatever. I had the same problem until I got the smtp right on my cox account. SMTP doesn't mean Send Mail To People:)

I'm using the .mac service, I've got ssl checked and password for authentication but I still have mail stuck in the outbox

Try disabling the password option for outgoing. It's not needed and usually will stop mail from being sent.
