Is there a way I can partition my startup disk with the OSX volume on, without losing or reinstalling my OS?

That is correct. In versions older than 10.5, you'll need a program like iPartition if you want to do it on-the-fly (without losing data). Otherwise, you'd need to backup, repartition and format, then restore the data.

Thank you for your replies. I'll check out iPartition.
