Yesterday photoshop kept freezing before it would open.

This morning Preview wouldn't work, neither would coda. Eventually Finder crashed and refused to start back up again.

I restarted my comp and it took ages to actually switch on. Eventually it got going. I ran most of the scripts in main menu. Things seem to be OK at the moment but to be honest I can't be certain anything is better.

Any ideas what is going on?

Nope, but some advice. Backup your files right away to an external drive. Your Mac may have a hardware fault and you might lose it. My immediate response to the symptoms you describe is a RAM failure, perhaps sporadic at the moment, but this is just a SWAG.

How much RAM do you have, and how much hard disk do you have? Are you low on either? If you are simply overloading your machine, perhaps that might contribute to this, although the Mac should just slow down, not crash.
