problem with password for finder

I just bought a used imac g3 from ebay with ox 9 on it and when i boot up the computer it takes me to a password for finder i dont know what the password is how can i bypass it or what can i do i dont have any software yet and the seller does not know the password.

um, was this possibly a stolen item? if the seller was the previous owner, hed have this password.

well it does not matter now if it was

I dont know though if it was or not he just said he did not know of a password on the computer and now i just turned it on and instead of the password i see a folder blinking a ? mark over and over.

Did it come with the instal CDs? (not sure if there is a password utility on CD for OS 9)

could be a bad hard drive, did it come with any cds, like apple hardware test, or software restore?

If you have an install cd, boot from it and go to the preferences folder and trash all the Multiple Users prefs. (This will not work if it's an Open Firmware password)

While you're there, run DiskFirstAid on the drive.
