Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct forum but i'll give it a go. I want to keep my new G4 iBook as clean as possible. I'm running OS 10.3.6.

So far all i do for inet security is have the firewall running, delete cookies, history and cache daily and avoid visiting porn sites.

On the family PC i have all kinds of **** - so in comparrison i'm worried about this little beauty.

there arent really any viruses for mac os x, a few, but most are destroyed by the regular security updates. so you havent anything to worry about really, and the built in firewall is really abouit all the protection you need, no one will hack into your mac or anything.
so its cool. :mac:

the only real security you may need to pay any attention too is if youre on a network with other wintel machines, or using wireless internet like airport, if so, use wep.

Almost, if not all, the windows problems rely on the registry and the fact that it is indefensible even though it's the system file system core. Unix type OS including Mac OS X have no such registry. We instead have the kernel (Darwin) and the Admin and root user as a system core set

Yea... and about the viruses...

You won't probably get one. There is a few, as said before, but they are ones that you would have to download with stupid freeware... So you just have to be a safe surfer...

when setting up your wireless connection, there should have been an option for wep(wireless encryption protocol) I think thats what it stands for. turn it on, this will
allow you to seup a required password to access the connection.

oh, no. that means i'll have to get that guy back out here to do the wireless thing. and he is pure pc person.

i guess i'll do what i gotta do. seeking out protection for my children is a far far cry from where i was before... enjoying watching my children play with a parliament of owls with the doors unlocked, in colorful rooms of their own and no fear in their eyes.

if you or anyone in here in the administrative or moderator level, know of how or WHAT is used or can be done about this satellite thing over my head, i'd appreciate an email about it.

there is truly nothing funny about not being able to protect your child. i would hope, in light of current events, that more than just the 3,000 families in nyc, and the families of those people who have been murdered in iraq, have come to realize that stalking, be it on the internet, in one's home town, or even to the point of being assaulted in one's own home.... is not good and not funny. it is frightening... and that destruction does NOT lead toward anything creative, just a complete lack of desire to trust. and a great desire to put up very very high walls before a formal introduction of the innocent, in hopes that for every person near these children, there might be at least one who IS a decent human being and watch out after them should i not be there to protect them.

if you know of anyone who knows about sophisticated spyware, i need to know how to get rid of it. or fight it.

thanks for all of your advice.

there is NO spyware on the mac, if you have a problem, its most likely that the range on your wireless router is set too high and youre not using wep, allowing others in your area to use it as well, they dont have to hack into it, their wireless internet card (airport card for example) will simply detect a signal and hook to it if they want.

It's easy to enable wep though...
Just access your routers setup page, switch on wireless encryption protocoll and write down the key it gives you.

Enter that key on any systems that you want to go online with and you're set.

There are NO virus programs and NO spyware programs on mac. And if you have a firewall setup you WON'T BE HACKED.

As macman said: Without encryption (wep), people aren't "hacking" your internet connection, they are just doing the same you are, finding the signal and going online with it. They probably aren't doing any harm to your computers, just surfing the internet for free...

as for the pc: buy an iMac ;)

yup, just poen safari, type in the ip address of your router, it should be in the instruction book that came with your router, go into options, enable wep, then require a password, then set it up.
