need help connecting a seperate monitor to my laptop

I would like to know what kind of monitor that i can hook up to my laptop.
The real question is: does it have to be mac compatible?, and
does the monitor cable port only work for mac compatible monitors?

If the iBook is like the MacBook, you can connect any digital monitor to its video output port. You'll need a converter cable to convert the mini DVI to a regular DVI cable. I currently have a Samsung Syncmaster connected to my MacBook that way.
