Hey Check out the Apple website.
It says that BOTH 16GB and 8GB iPhones are unavailable for purchase!!
Could this mean that they have stopped making the 1st gen and maybe are releasing the 2nd gen with 3G updates?

Apple announced on Tuesday(Maybe Monday) That they are sold out of iPhones on both the US and UK online stores. And that the only place that you can find them is in the stores (if you are lucky).
Another post has a link to iPhones refurbished on the AT&T store online.

We are expecting the 3G announcement in the WWDC, and looking at mid to late June for the release of the 3G.

Apple aren't just "sold out" like they claim to be - demand is not as high as it was before - they are using that as an excuse as they have stopped producing them - visit some of the rumor sites which have references to the manufacturers.

Yea,
Apple has always produced so many of there products.
iPhone sales are down like Alex was saying.
There is a reason they are unavailable at the online stores

It's better for Apple to run the channel dry a few days or even weeks prior to a new product launch. The flipside would be manufacturing in excess and selling at a discount/loss when they do announce a new product.
