The quickest way I know how to do it is search for 'Safari' in Spotlight, then click on the application to launch it. When it launches click and hold the mouse button on the Safari icon and when the menu comes up click on 'Keep in Dock.'

The normal way is to find Safari, or any app, and just drag the icon to the dock.

Do a finder search or a spotlight search for any files/apps/ect ect in the future. And if you learned, then its not a stupid question.
