Is it possible, or do they have to have the same operating system?

Thanks

If you are trying to use you powerbook as a display for another computer, I don't think this is possible;

Like most computers, the digital (DVI) or VGA ports do not accept an input - they only output. The PowerBook monitor can not be used externally however.

Thanks for that, most helpful, now I know it's a monitor I need.
There is a spare DVI port on the PC- does this restrict me to certain monitors?
I'm not too clear on LCD, VGA, CRT differences.
thanks again

Only expensive LCD have DVI input (the ones I've seen anyways.. the ones around AU$400 have VGA connectors only).

Did your video card come with a DVI-to-VGA adapter? Most should. If you can't find it, you can buy one at a computer shop. This should address any limitations you may have.

CRT only use VGA connectors, ie. the one that looks like a serial port.

In terms of image quality, I haven't had luxury of trying DVI monitors so I can't comment. The LCDs with VGA connectors looks pretty good to me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, your explanations were very helpful and clear.

Actually quality isn't that important,and I have limited funds.

My Pbook came with a DVI to VGA adapter so I could use that to connect from the DVI of the PC to a new (second hand) monitor with a VGA connector.

I guess I'm off to ebay.

Thanks again

I think you miss-understood my post, I miss-understood your reply.

The PowerBook has an output only DVI (or Mini-DVI) port, which plugs into a DVI or VGA adapter.

As I understand it so far;

The Pbook has no input so therefore cannot be used as a second monitor.

The video card on my PC has a DVI output which I could connect via a VGA adapter to another monitor. This is my only option for 2 displays.

thanks
