Hi,

I was wonder what the difference was between NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB and 512MB. Is there so much of a different its worth $450 more?

Thank you in advance for the advice!

Depends on what you're going to do. If you're a professional graphic designer/video editor etc. then surely you would benefit from the higher end model. If you're just going to use it for surfing the web, email, word processing, iTunes, watching DVD etc. like I do then 256MB of VRAM is more than enough.

If your a gamer, then eventually you will want to have the higher VRAM, but in my opinion go for the one that is within your budget for the time being. Most games would happily run on the 256mb VRAM one at the moment.

The only 'difference' would be that there is more memory for textures, etc to be loaded into, and to be worked with.

Anything that has come out in the past year would be more than able to fully utilize a midrange card like the 8600. In fact, the 8600 wouldn't be able to play a game like Crysis or even Call of Duty 4 at the highest settings.

i haven't played games in a while, let alone on a MacBook Pro, but last I checked a 256mb card would be fine for it.

You say this like there exists a video card, or even pair of video cards, that can play Crysis on the highest settings. :p

^^ LOL!! Yeah, it's nice of them to make a game so intense that you have to tone it down just to play well. Not all of us can afford Blackbirds, game developers!
