I noticed that if I drag files to an airport drive connected to the time capsule they transfer faster than it takes time machine to back up file to time capsule's HD. Is there a reason why time capsule backups take longer or is it just a problem with mine?

It is not a problem.

Dragging a few files over to be copied is naturally going to be faster than backing up 'all' the files...
