black squares around active object

I guess I don't fully understand your problem. Can you give us a bit more detail, including some information about your system? Thanks a lot.

I think I know what your problem is, you have VoiceOver turned on. Go to system preferences> universal access. Under the Seeing tab the first thing is VoiceOver, you can turn it off there. Or you can just press command+F5 to turn it off.
