Missing icons desk top

Hi
Can anybody help, I have lost all the icons on my desk top. I can still find the folders and external HD when in FINDER. Also iphoto will not start up with my photo albums even if I 'alt' open and choose link/folder.
PS I am really bad at knowing what's where and how it all works.
