Boot Camp 2.1 is available for download from the Apple download page. This update is recommended for all Boot Camp users and should be installed prior to installing SP3 for WinXP.

Note of caution - If you did any driver updates on your own (from your XP or Vista installation) version 2.1 of Boot Camp may overwrite the newer drivers with older versions.

I updated the GMA X3100 Intel Mobile Graphics drivers myself from the Intel web site in order to obtain the correct resolution for my Samsung external display. Luckily, the Intel drivers included with Boot Camp 2.1 were smart enough not to overwrite the later ones I had downloaded and installed. But that might not be the case with other drivers.

Regards.

I think you may be referring to this article which was last modified, May 13, 2008. I could not get Boot Camp 2.1 to install. I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2. I spent about an hour on the phone with a Product Specialist, but to no avail. He told me that he has tried this workaround on three or four other Intel iMacs, and it has not worked.

Interesting reading about others who installed XP Service Pack 3, without updating Boot Camp 2.1. One other problem, I do not have any System Restore points, and it is turned on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Installing Boot Camp 2.1 is not necessary for updating XP to SP3. I had no problems whatsoever with SP3 and Boot Camp 2.0. Boot Camp 2.1 as I understand it was issued primarily for users of Vista. However, it does include some later drivers than the original supplied from the Leopard DVD. Those same drivers can be downloaded separately.

As for your restore points not being saved, make sure the system has owner permissions of the hidden restore file information. Also do this: Turn off system restore, reboot XP, turn restore back on.

Regards.

chscag, BIG THANKS!

I was able to create a System Restore Point after reading what you wrote. I may try to install Windows XP SP3 on my Intel iMac this week, but I want to backup all my files and data before doing the upgrade. I will not try to install the Boot Camp 2.1 update that Apple recommends.

Thanks again for your help!

I can't install Windows XP SP3 on my Intel iMac. I do have enough space on my hard drive.

Okay, I am going to take a two-day break, and then try to download this sucker (XP SP3) again.

If anyone has a suggestion please chime in. This forum looks like it has a good brain trust. By the way, I am new to Mac.

Also unable to install SP3 on XP

I have XP SP2 installed on a 26 Intel Imac's (white versions) and SP3 has failed to install on everyone of them.

I have tried re-installing Leopard & updating to the most recent version of Boot Camp 2.1. I have ensured that there is enough free disk space which is in excess of 10GB of space. I have tried pre downloading and installing from the local hard drive instead of through Microsoft updates.

None of the above has worked.

I have installed SP3 on 2 intel macs - not close to Ishtech's 26 but it worked fine on both.

Installed the boot camp update then downloaded the SP3 standalone installer (rather than going through windows update). Then installed SP3. No problems.

I forgot about the XP SP3 standalone installer. It is certainly worth a try. I was listening to Leo Laporte this weekend, and he had one caller that ended up with BSOD after installing SP3 on his wife's Windows machine.

I would like to use Mac 100% of the time and leave the Windows world behind. However, I can no longer type, and I need to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I have MacSpeech Dictate, but this program is not yet MATURE.

Tomorrow (2nd Tuesday of every month) Microsoft will be releasing its hot fixes.
Mike updated his wife’s computer to SP3 and now she gets the dreaded BSOD and he can’t boot from it. He hopes it’s Microsoft’s fault, not his. Leo says that since he can’t boot from a CD means that Mike didn’t do anything wrong. It has to be SP3 or even a hardware issue.

Microsoft tests these service packs pretty exhaustively, but they can’t test every conceivable hardware configuration. What’s causing the failed SP3 installation could be a bad driver. And that’s usually remedied over time as Microsoft fixes each driver in the mix.
