I'm excited. I may have just met my new computer. 24" has 3.06 GHz Penryns, nVidia 8800 GS and they have dropped the outrageous fee they wanted for the extra 2 GB down to + $200.

I have been torn between the Mac Pro and the 24" iMac. The Mac Pro has had the lead, but this iMac update makes the argument a lot closer. With the move to Penryn's, the bump up over 3 GHz and the inclusion of the faster nVidia graphics, the new 24" iMac is pretty compelling.

Nice decision to be forced to make! :D

Because nobody would have bought Macs over the last few months and the company would have lost millions. The new machines went on sale today.

The new machine have slightly better architecture (not that you'll notice), most have 2gig as standard and there's an option for a GeForce 8800GS.

You've bought the 2.4Ghz 24" iMac with ATI Radeon 2600. The only way you've lost out is that you have 1Gig of RAM instead of 2.

There have been rumours of a tweaked iMac for the last 3 months, so you've had some 'unofficial' warning as it were.

THat doesn't even bother me in the least.....ooooooh .2 ghz faster

oooooh li' bit better 8800 vc.

The big news is definately the 8800GS, which is a pretty big improvement on the HD2400/2600.

Overall, the memory (speed + amount) and CPU boosts and GPU improvement makes the iMac a more viable mid-range gaming system.

I agree, it's the one thing that really jumped out at me. This should satisfy the average gamer who was on the fence between buying a Mac or building another PC

Crap, bought my machine through Best Buy just over a week ago and still inside the 14day return policy...but with a restock fee I'm sure. I do have one dead pixel, which BB does returns on.

I might call around to see when they will get the new ones in.

if it's just gaming or film editing that is improved, then it makes no difference to me, seeing how i use my macs for graphic design for most part.

Whew. I just bought a 24" iMac on Saturday and due to some unfortunate circumstances (at least it seemed so until today) I haven't been able to crack it open yet.

Of course I got a macbook pro something like 15 days before the latest refresh, so I guess 1 for 1 isn't too bad. :)

That is so not fair, I just bought mine a little over a week ago.

Looks like a winner to me. That machine is going to have a bunch more people jumping ship.

And about the same money as the last system I built for that other OS.

If it'd been out a year ago, I'd have to have it. Now ... don't think I want another machine that's going to put me stuck behind a desk in the office all the time.

Maybe if I start playing online poker for a living ... now that's a thought.

Oh dear,
Please tell me I am not the only one who just lost £280 by buying the 2.8 Imac just 22 days ago!!
I understand the whole technology keep up thing but although I like the machine, that is a big hit for a switcher.
So why should I ever buy anything Apple again?

For folks that bought an iMac within the last year, the new ones are a modest update, (the exception being the 24" with the new nVidia video card). You should be just fine with the machines that you have. The new machines should definitely be a great enticement for those that are still on the fence about upgrading from a Microcrap equipped PC.

is it even thinner?

ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR3 - is that a graphic card the previous imac had (before the update)?
