mini DVI to TV output only in Black & white

I connected a mini DVI adapter to my iMac to give TV video output via the RCA connector. Although the resolution is good , I can only get black & white images. I have checked that the connector is firmly plugged in at both ends, tried 2 different TVs and shorter cable length. Any ideas on how to get colour output?
