Mail is stuck

Hi,
I have a macbook OS and my mail is simply stuck. when i try to open the application, it starts to react and then simply get stuck.

What should i do???!

I'm having this problem on my MacBook Pro, 10.5.2.

I click Mail, and the icon lights up, but the program never opens.
